What LangMem is
LangMem is a library from the LangChain team with utilities for extracting memories from conversations, letting agents manage memory through tools, and optimizing prompts, typically on top of a LangGraph store.
What Auld is
Auld is a memory service. Your systems send time-stamped records; Auld extracts memories, reconciles changes into current state with history, and returns cited memories scoped to the viewer, over REST or MCP.
Differences in design
| Dimension | LangMem | Auld |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Library (SDK) | Service (API and MCP) |
| Storage | Your store (e.g. LangGraph store backends) | Managed, or your cloud under Enterprise |
| Reconciliation of changes | Your extraction prompts and logic | Built in, with history |
| Access control | Your namespaces and code | Identities, audiences, visibility |
| Framework | Designed around LangChain/LangGraph | Any framework over HTTP |
What remains your job with an SDK
- Running and scaling the store, backups and retention.
- Deciding how conflicting facts are resolved and keeping history.
- Implementing tenant isolation and deletion.
- Monitoring extraction quality as prompts and models change.
How to choose
Choose LangMem when
- You want full control and are on LangGraph already.
- Your memory needs are simple and per user.
Choose Auld when
- You’d rather not operate memory infrastructure.
- You need history,
asOfand scoped recall out of the box.
Evaluate and verify
Trade-offs depend on your data. Run the same test set against each option — the methodology page has a checklist — and confirm current capabilities in the official documentation.
