What Cognee is
Cognee is an open-source framework (with a hosted offering) that turns documents and other data into a knowledge graph plus vector index, which agents can query as memory.
What Auld is
Auld is a memory service. Your systems send time-stamped records; Auld extracts memories, reconciles changes into current state with history, and returns cited memories scoped to the viewer, over REST or MCP.
Differences in design
| Dimension | Cognee | Auld |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Open-source pipeline and library | Hosted service |
| Data model | Knowledge graph + embeddings | Dated memories with sources, entities and relationships |
| Time | Check current docs | Validity intervals and asOf |
| Operations | You run databases and pipelines (or use its hosted option) | Managed, or own cloud under Enterprise |
| Customization | Pipelines and graph models you define | Entity and edge customization on Enterprise |
How to choose
Choose Cognee when
- You want to design the graph pipeline yourself.
- Your data is mostly documents to structure.
Choose Auld when
- Your data is a stream of events and conversations that change facts.
- You want scoped, cited recall without operating graph infrastructure.
Evaluate and verify
Trade-offs depend on your data. Run the same test set against each option — the methodology page has a checklist — and confirm current capabilities in the official documentation.
